The winter fashion edit: What to wear on your period?

Winter is coming, and it’s time for that inevitable wardrobe change. Goodbye bikinis and summer straps, hello warm knitwear and coats.

Even during the colder season, we’ll all face that inevitable question; what outfit shall I wear on my period?

This is because hormonal changes in our bodies can lead to all sorts of discomfort. Bloating, cramps, muscle aches, the list goes on. As someone who suffers with period cramps, I know that tight waistbands are big NO when on my period. Restrictive clothing in general just heightens my discomfort when the cramps kick in. So, I avoid these outfits.

Let’s be honest…

There’s no shame in slightly adjusting your clothing or daily routine around your period to make yourself feel better. You need to listen to your body and go with whatever works for you. Don’t put pressure on yourself. I love Mindy Kaling’s honesty on this topic. When appearing on a US TV show, Mindy joked about women silhouette on a main-brand tampon box, Mindy joked:

“What’s funny about this photo, actually, for any woman who actually does menstruate, you would never wear that outfit… You’d be in like big sweat pants, or at least that’s me. She’s wearing a necklace and high heels, she’s ready to go on a big sexy adventure.”

Amen to that. This is the case for many of us. Truth be told, when your period arrives comfortable dressing takes priority. And that is okay.

Period-friendly A/W trends:

When the seasons change, it’s naturally time for a wardrobe update. Whether you’re motivated by new season trends or if you’re just being practical. It is colder after all and summer clothes don’t cut it against the blustery Winter winds.

We’ve highlighted our top 3 A/W trends that are both winter-friendly and period-friendly. Giving you all the inspo you need to find a comfortable yet stylish outfit – if that’s your thing!

Metallic, statement boots:

Whether you opt for a metallic, glitter or seventies print boot, this is a straightforward way to upgrade your favourite ‘period outfit.’ Boots are always a winner during the colder seasons. On-trend metallic boots can update your outfit and can be paired with a comfortable, slouchy knit or relaxed midi dress.
If you’re not keen on an eye-grabbing metallic boots add a hint of A/W trend with statement hosiery. Whether they are fluffy, patterned or coloured. Tights are also perfect to winter-proof your favourite summer outfits.

Seventies corduroy:

Corduroy is in for A/W which means you will see plenty of corduroy options in stores. Whether it’s a corduroy skirt, trousers or jacket. Corduroy is a more comfortable material than denim making a great alternative to wear on your period. An on-trend corduroy jacket or trousers are both practical and stylish. This feeds into the big A/W seventies trend. If you’re simply looking to tap into this trend but you’re seeking comfort, look for chunky knitwear in toffee and burnt orange colour palettes.

Oversized handbags:

Add an instant A/W update to a comfortable outfit. Oversized handbags are on-trend, and what could be more period-friendly? Granted, a supersized bag is not going to score points for comfort but it’s a practical alternative to summer’s mini bags. No need to cram your tampons and pads into a super small handbag. The oversized bag has room for all your period wear, you could even throw in your other essentials like a heat pad! When it comes to A/W bags, the bigger the better.

And there you have it! Simple ways to update and Winter-proof your favourite comfortable, period-friendly outfit. Will you be giving any of these trends a go? Or have other trends caught your eye? Drop us a comment below or tweet us @totmorganic. For Summer period outfit inspo click here.
