Self-care essentials: 4 podcasts to match your mood

Sometimes it feels impossible to schedule in some ‘me’ time but it’s so important. It’s easy to get lost in the flow of everyday life but even if you can only take time to relax and listen to a podcast for a short while, that’s a good start to up your self-care game.

Hormonal changes on the lead up to your period can leave you feeling tired and maybe a bit rundown. This is why you need to look after yourself and give your body time to relax. To add to our usual self-care inspo, in this post we’re giving you the low down on our favourite podcasts to match your mood.

For when you need a pick-me-up at work

‘The Boss Babes Podcast’

This podcast features a range of professional women and female entrepreneurs who have started a revolution by referring to themselves as “Boss Babes”. Between chatting all things business strategy, marriage, biohacking and money, this podcast will make you feel like you’re sitting down for matcha lattes with podcast hosts Natalie and Danielle, digging deep into real conversations. Prepare for laughs and surprises as you dive into the world of strong women in business.

One of the first episodes we would recommend is – Using your menstrual cycle to perform even better in business, Post-Birth Control Syndrome & Healing Hormone Imbalances.

The episode talks with guest Dr Brighten who is the author of Beyond the Pill, a 30-day plan to support women on birth control, help them transition off, and eliminate symptoms of post-birth control syndrome. They discuss how to give you the power to take control of your health. If you’re interested in why you might feel a certain way throughout your cycle, this is the perfect podcast episode. It’s so interesting you won’t be able to turn it off.

For when you want to giggle

‘When Life Gives You Melons’

Maya Jama hosts this podcast about work, life, sex, and boobs. She hosts a fully female panel and some of the conversations are bound to make you laugh. This is such a down to earth podcast. The relaxed style and honest topics make this podcast the perfect listen with friends or when you just need some ‘down time’ at the end of a long day.

When life gives you melons kicks off with a load of hilarious and heart-warming tails about the L word. In the first episode of season two Maya is joined by Beauty and Fashion Queen, Georgia Jones and Model/Presenter, Tia Ward talking all about love. They discuss first loves, friendships and remarrying.

So if you’re feeling like you want to enjoy a light-hearted and empowering podcast this is one to definitely check out, especially if you’ve had one of those days.

For when you just need some reassurance (because we all do sometimes!)

There are times when you just need a self-confidence boost and a bit of reassurance in your life. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the ‘idea of perfection’ when you’re scrolling through socials (spoiler alert, perfection is not reality). Accepting yourself and your wellbeing is so important, and we don’t want you to forget it!

Adulting podcast

The Adulting podcast by Oenone Forbat tackles loads of topics related to growing up. It’s refreshingly honest and reminds that growing up is challenging at all ages. The episode list includes “how to get your s*** together’ and ‘how to be unapologetically you.’

The most recent episode (#37) features Consultant Dermatologist, Anjali Mahto. Oenone and Anjali discuss skin conditions from cosmetic to medical. Anjali shares that nearly a third of people going through her clinic have had mental health issues due to their skin. This is definitely a topic which is not discussed or recognised enough!

In this episode, they also chat about a number of issues around skin routines, self-care and general myths around the skin. If you struggle with skin issues that are affecting your confidence or know of someone who does, then definitely give this episode a listen.

When you want to feel (more) powerful

‘The Guilty Feminist’

This five-star podcast hosted by Comedian Deborah Frances-White talks about being a ‘real feminist’ and is recorded in front of a live audience. Each week they discuss topics ‘all 21 first century feminists agree on’ while confessing their insecurities and hypocrisies themselves. It’s important to know that you don’t need to feel guilty about not fitting ‘every box’ that you set yourself to be a ‘feminist’.

Let’s start with one of their more recent podcasts. ‘Flying Solo with Geraldine Hickey and special guest Kate Bolick’.

The Guilty Feminist is such a funny and honest podcast; everyone can relate to the hilarious real-life stories shared. They start with the ‘I’m a feminist but…’ adding their own personal everyday situations to the end of the sentence. Undermining their own beliefs about being a feminist but in an honest, relatable and hilarious manner. You will feel a part of something and feel this is more than just a podcast. To quote Australian comedian, Geraldine Hickey, you will be screaming ‘ thank god I’m not alone’ while you listen.

Check these out and come chat to us on socials to tell us what podcasts you rely on to unwind. For more self-care inspo, head to this post where we’re sharing 6 other ways to look after your mental and physical wellbeing.
