Everything You Need To Know About The Signs Of Menopause

In the UK, there are 15.5 million women currently navigating menopause. Despite this number, menopause is something that still is not spoken or informed about enough. Too often, menopause is reduced to one image…a woman fanning herself during a hot flush. But menopause is so much more than that. It’s a natural, complex stage of life that affects every person differently.

What is Menopause?

So what is menopause? Menopause is when your menstrual period stops for 12 consecutive months. It usually happens between ages 45 and 55, but everyone’s timeline is unique. Marking the end of egg release and a significant drop in oestrogen production, it signals the close of the reproductive years.

Before menopause officially arrives, there’s a stage known as perimenopause which is the transitional period when your hormones start to fluctuate. You might begin to notice symptoms, even though your periods haven’t completely stopped yet. Perimenopause can start in your 30s or 40s, though again every person is different.

And yes, hot flushes are a symptom we often hear about most, but they’re just one piece of a much bigger picture.

The Signs of Menopause

Did you know there are actually 48+ symptoms of menopause? While every person’s experience is different, here are a few of the most common symptoms of menopause and perimenopause:

Irregular periods

One of the first signs of perimenopause is often a change in your menstrual cycle. Your periods may become shorter or longer, lighter or heavier, and sometimes more unpredictable. Some people experience what’s known as flooding, which involves heavy bleeding that can feel sudden or difficult to manage. These shifts happen because your hormone levels, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, start to fluctuate as your body prepares for menopause. At TOTM, we have night pads, super pads, and super plus tampons made with organic cotton, gentle on your body while giving you the absorbency you need for those heavier days.

Disruption of sleep

Your sleep pattern might change during menopause. Night sweats, caused by sudden heat surges, can make it difficult to stay asleep. On top of that, insomnia or general restlessness can creep in, leaving you feeling tired or foggy during the day. Sleep disruption can have a knock-on effect on mood and concentration too, which is why creating calming bedtime routines and wearing organic cotton night pads can make a huge difference.

Painful sex

As oestrogen levels drop, the vaginal tissues can become thinner and drier, leading to vaginal dryness. This can make sex uncomfortable or even painful. It’s completely normal, and there are treatments like vaginal moisturisers, lubricants, or local oestrogen therapy that can really help improve comfort and confidence.

Urinary changes

You might also notice changes in your bladder habits. Lower oestrogen levels can affect the urinary tract, leading to increased frequency, urgency, or a higher risk of infections. If you find you’re visiting the loo more often or feeling discomfort, your GP can offer advice and treatments to manage these symptoms effectively.

Brain fog

Many people experience brain fog, forgetfulness, or difficulty focusing. Fluctuating hormones, poor sleep, and stress can all play a role. While it can be frustrating, these symptoms are usually temporary and can be eased by looking after your sleep, stress levels, and nutrition.

Mood Changes

Hormone shifts can affect your emotional wellbeing too. You might notice mood swings, irritability, anxiety, or low mood, even if you’ve never experienced these before. This is a natural response to the hormonal changes happening in your body. Talking about it, seeking support, and, if needed, speaking with your GP about treatment options (like therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or HRT) can help.

Symptoms can vary in both intensity and duration. Some people move through menopause with only a few mild changes, while for others it can be a more challenging time. Everyone’s experience is different, and that’s completely okay.

How do I check for Menopause?

Menopause is usually diagnosed based on symptoms, especially if you’re over 45 and haven’t had a period for 12 months.

If you’re under 45, or if your doctor suspects early menopause, they might recommend a blood test to check your follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. High FSH levels can indicate that your ovaries are producing less oestrogen. However, hormone levels can fluctuate a lot during perimenopause, so a single test doesn’t always give the full picture.

Doctors may also carry out a thyroid function test, as thyroid issues can cause similar symptoms. When you do enter menopause, there are many menopause treatment options both hormonal and nonhormonal available to give you a better quality of life. Consult with a GP about your symptoms.

You’re Not Alone

Menopause can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to remember you’re not alone. There are a range of treatment options, both hormonal (like HRT) and non-hormonal (like lifestyle changes, nutrition, and supplements), that can help you manage symptoms and maintain a good quality of life.

Talking to your GP, connecting with menopause support groups, or even just sharing your experience with friends can make a world of difference.

Menopause is a natural transition, not something to be hidden or feared. By speaking up and supporting each other, we can make sure it’s understood, respected, and embraced for what it is.
