We all know houseplants make the perfect Insta-worthy interior. But, filling your home with plants can actually benefit your health. We’ve put together a list of plants that can help on your period!

Struggle to unwind on your period and get a restful night’s sleep? This is not uncommon. In fact, sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley explains that “The hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which play a role in regulating the menstrual cycle, can also influence sleep” (more on that here). Menstruation can play havoc with our bodies, it can even affect immunity!

Believe it or not, this is where plants can come in handy. Read on to discover which plants can help on your period and why:

Aloe Vera:

As mentioned above, periods can influence our ability to get a peaceful night’s sleep. Sleep problems can be a by-product of other menstrual problems or it can be due to our hormones. But, the loss of iron through our bleed can leave us feeling run-down and tired. This means it’s SO important to get enough sleep/rest when you are on your period.

So, what plant can help with this? Aloe Vera is a saviour for sleep. NASA describes it as “one of the top air-purifying plants”, which can improve your sleep. It removes air pollutants to improve air quality in your home.

This plant also has skin healing abilities! So, Aloe Vera skin care products can help soothe inflammation caused by hormonal breakouts.

Jasmine:

This plant is also a house must-have for your period. Not only is the scent heavenly, but Jasmine has a therapeutic affect (that’s why it’s often used in teas and essential oils). It can help to soothe the body and mind.

By relaxing the body, you can potentially also ease other menstrual-related discomfort. Including PMS headaches and potentially even bloating!

Snake plant:

This plant can make any interior look good. Like Aloe Vera, this plant emits oxygen and filters out toxins and carbon dioxide. By doing so, it improves the air quality, and this can help you get a better night’s sleep! It is also thought to improve energy levels – perfect when that post-period slump hits.
Good news, the snake plant is also very easy to care for. It doesn’t need to be watered every day and doesn’t need much light. Perfect if you live a busy lifestyle or spend a lot of time away from home!

Vervain/Verbena plant:

To handle loss of nutrients, and PMS symptoms it’s so important to get rest on your period. The Vervain/Verbena plant can help with both of these things as it eases tension and stress, restoring balance. The dew from the plant is used as a relaxation remedy to calm and soothe the body and mind. The Lemon verbena plant is so relaxing that when used as an herbal tea, it can have a slight sedative effect.
